Rehabilitation Write for Us

RehabilitationRehabilitation is caring; you get, keep, or improve the skills you need daily. These capacities can be physical, mental, and cognitive (thinking and learning). They may be lost due to illness or injury or as a side effect of medical treatment. Rehabilitation can improve your daily life and function.

Who Needs Rehabilitation?

It is for people who have lost skills they need for daily life. Some of the more common causes include:

  • Injuries such as trauma, including burns, fractures (broken bones), traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries
  • cerebrovascular accident
  • serious infections
  • major surgery
  • Side effects of medical treatments, such as for cancer
  • Specific congenital disabilities or genetic disorders
  • Developmental disorders
  • Chronic pain, including back and neck

The Benefits of Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation can reduce the effects of many health problems, such as diseases (acute or chronic), conditions, injuries, or trauma. It can also complement other health interventions, such as medical or surgical ones, and contributes to achieving the best possible result. Thus, for example, rehabilitation can help reduce, manage or prevent the complications of many health problems, such as spinal cord injuries, strokes, or fractures.

It also contributes to minimizing or stopping the disabling effects of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular ailments, cancer, and diabetes, providing patients with self-management strategies and the technical aids they need, or managing pain or other complications.

Rehabilitation in Emergencies

Natural hazards, such as earthquakes or disease outbreaks, and artificial hazards, such as conflict, terrorism, or industrial accidents, can create tremendous rehabilitation needs due to injury or disease. In addition, they jointly disrupt existing services and mainly affect the most vulnerable populations and the most fragile health systems.

While the importance of rehabilitation in emergencies is recognized in clinical and humanitarian guidance, it is rarely considered part of health systems’ preparedness and early response. The result is that pre-existing limitations to rehabilitation services are magnified, health facility delivery is less efficient, and those directly affected are at risk of other disorders and disabilities.

WHO Response

For rehabilitation to meet its complete objectives, efforts should be made to reinforce the health system as a whole and type rehabilitation part of health care at all stages of the health system, as well as universal health coverage.

In 2017, WHO hurled the Rehabilitation 2030 initiative, which emphasizes the want to strengthen health systems. And calls on all stakeholders to come together to work on different priority areas, such as: improving leadership and governance, promoting a multidisciplinary network of it professionals, expanding funding for rehabilitation, and improving data collection and research on restoration.

WHO responds to the challenges identified and promotes the strengthening of health systems for rehabilitation:

  • providing technical support and building capacity in countries
  • fostering leadership, priority setting, and resource mobilization
  • developing standards, criteria, and technical guidelines
  • shaping research agendas and monitoring progress
